Sustainable Salons-project

The Future skills for a better life in Sustainable Salons-project seeks to transfer the ideas and knowledge about sustainability and the environment through information, a simple standard, education and training to students, schools, hairdressing salons and its employees and other stakeholders in the hair and beauty sector. In addition to providing insight into sustainability, this project also aims to provide a picture of the profile of a hairdresser in 2030 from the perspective of sustainability, technology and entrepreneurial skills.

Context

The hairdressing industry in Europe employs more than a million people in 400,000 hairdressing salons and receives 350 million potential customers. Hairdressing (and hairdressing) services, together with beauty treatments - the Hair and Beauty sector as it is called - make up the personal services sector. The sector has undergone many changes in recent years. The sector often has more affinity with knowledge of the trade than with the other aspects of the company. Attention to labor, sustainability and the environment, health and safety, marketing and services are success factors for the future. Many of these aspects could be shared under the label: sustainability and forward-looking skills.

Goals

In this project Future skills for a better life in Sustainable Salons, we will combine sustainable ideas through education and training with innovative ideas within the sector. The educational products we want to generate during the process include workshops on sustainability and innovation, teaching materials for schools and extracurricular education on sustainability in the 'sustainable' hairdressing salon '. We will start developing a profile of a hairdresser and his competences (sustainability, technology, entrepreneurship) in 2030; In parallel, we will develop a simplified, low-threshold system around sustainability / environment (label) for schools (salon). At the same time, we are working on an internet tools for self-assessment at competence level and we measure the gap in profile and future competences and the gap between the level and the sustainability system; specific sustainability / environmental learning materials, focused on the sector and awareness-raising tools to use in vocational education and training and salons, to use in communicating with employees and customers on the topics. Against this background, co-financing of this proposed project by the EU would allow participating partners to develop knowledge and tools that can be easily implemented by schools and used at an easily accessible level in salons across Europe.

What and how

In the project we collect facts by means of an inventory of the hairdresser's competences in 2030, the desired situation in a sustainable salon, focus on environmental aspects (core of a simple standard / norm), competences necessary to achieve this situation and research into two diagnostic self-evaluation tools to map the current situation on:

1. competence level and measuring the gap on profile and future competences and

2. the gap from the level to the sustainability system on the environment and sustainability in schools (salon).

We discuss the results of the inventory with experts and the results will later be used as input for the development of the self-evaluation tools, the learning material about the environment in a sustainable salon and awareness material about sustainability.

The 2 multiplier events are planned to share results and to generate engagement and comments from our stakeholders. The project operates with a final sector conference with student participation along the project.

Using the competences of the different partners, their network, the experts, entrepreneurs in the sector and the teachers and students at the conferences and at home in the schools, we combine knowledge and perseverance to complete the task in a good way.

Results and impact

We will communicate the results of the whole project through a brochure, articles and press releases, a project website and the closing conference in Italy. By informing and seeking interaction with students, teachers and policymakers, we want to take steps towards greater sustainability. Vocational education is in close contact with the businesses in the local community and can open doors to changes in the industry. Therefore, activities will be organized with students, employees and employers in the partner countries. Multiple classes with students and teachers are actively involved in the activities in each country. To show through this project, we in Europe have to act sustainably in the sector in a striking way.

Long-term

The effect of working sustainably in a "Sustainable or green salon" is to reduce risks and have more fun and satisfaction in the workplace. Sustainability means less environmental damage, less waste and a better and healthier use of materials and resources, a more controlled use of energy and water, more sustainable choices when investing in equipment, fewer problems with health and safety and a higher level.
